Except for around 200 lithographies
the work of Moulijn consists also of a great number of paintings,
sketches and water-colours. His main topics were nature and landscapes.
The pages with pictures by Moulijn of this site give a small impression
of his work. We have tried to consider paintings and lithographs
on the base of the themes and the symbols of the presentation. The
presentation of the different forms of landscapes reveals one of
the main characteristics of Moulijn "as painter of the romantic
solitude" (Algemeen Handelsblad). In fact the landscape is
also the environment of human life. In the perception of Moulijn
this is often only the indication of human axistence. The landscape
is often also formed by man: Moulijn shows the silence of
parc landscapes. He visualises the power, with which the
bridge in Rotterdam spans the river Maas. In the "Remparts
of Naarden" the calm strength of this fortification is
in the foreground. The lithograph "Castle
ruin of Beaufort " (Luxembourg) shows the slow decline
of power and strength. Idyllic landscapes are another aspect of
the forming of the landscape by man: The garden of the Villa
d'Este in Tivoli is an example. Of some importance is also the
symbolic reflexion of human characteristics for example in one of
the few wood carvings or on book-plates.
Of major importance for his work were journeys to Germany (1905
Monschau, 1909 Holzhausen), Italy (1911 Tivoli and Frascati, 1938
Florence), France (1930 Fontainebleau, 1931 Neuilly), but also in
the Netherlands. The common characteristic of most of his paintings
and lithographs is the tranquility in the landscape. |
